More Signs That the Republican Party Hates Democratic Rule By We the People

 

This is a picture of a magnet that was being sold at Strand's Book Store in New York City a few years ago. No, I did not buy it, but I liked it and took a picture, which I am sharing here now. 

As if we needed further proof that the Republican party has embraced the authoritarianism of Trump to such an extent that they have basically abandoned any former commitments to this nation remaining a democracy, we now see attacking democracy out in the open. Not long ago, a group of Republcians were actively pushing for a repeal of the 17th amendment. That amendment gave voters the right to elect their own senators.

In other words, once again, Republicans are fearful that the American people will elect not to keep them in power. So in other words, since they are in trouble and their message is apparently not enough to keep them in power, they now want to get rid of the people's ability to have a say in their own government.

How is it that something like 40% of Americans still more or less identify as Republicans and/or support their cause? Do they not understand the threat the Republicans pose to democracy? Or perhaps do they not care? Perhaps a bit of both?

Here is a snippet from a recent article by Andrew Standton of Newsweek, which explains a little bit more in detail this latest attack on the Constitution and the right of We the People to actually elect our own government representatives (see link below):

A group of Republican representatives is pushing to repeal the 17th Amendment, which gave voters the right to elect their own senators, amid a feud between House and Senate Republicans over the SAVE Act. 

The push to repeal the 17th Amendment comes as House Republicans express frustration with the Senate over its inaction on the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, a proposed bill that would upend federal elections. Repealing efforts face an uphill battle, as only a handful of legislators have signed onto the bill, but it still highlights the growing rift among Republicans.

So there it is.

Again, we hardly need Republicans to show any more example that they are against our traditional democratic processes, or what is in the best interests of Americans more generally. 

How can such an extremist party be the biggest party - currently the ruling party - of what still remains, for now, the world's leading superpower?
