Ran into this video a few days ago. And while I was not really surprised by most of what was said, it did strike me as something which most Americans might need to watch or find out about. Indeed, there are certain myths regarding World War II which Americans in particular get wrong.
Here are some which are addressed in this video:
Nazi Germany was already losing the war, and badly, well before D-Day. Any halfway decent historical atlas or book - or period newspapers - will reveal the truth of this. Indeed, the Soviet Union had handed the Nazis a huge defeat at Stalingrad, one which the Germans never recovered from. They were on the retreat from that point onward. By 1944, they were clearly losing the war on the Eastern Front to the Soviet Red Army.
The Marshall Plan was not merely a generous act. As pointed out in this video, it was a way of protecting against seemingly inevitable Soviet rule. Moreover, my father pointed out that building up the economies of other formerly wealthy western nations in Europe would ultimately boost the American economy, providing profitable markets for American products. Prior to him saying that, I had also believed in the myth that we gave Western Europe all of this money and resources to rebuild out of the kindness of our hearts. Have to admit that after he told me that, it made a lot more sense. Never again would I believe the "goodness of our heart" explanation of the Marshall Plan again.
There are other things, as well. Take a look at the video below:
