In Afghanistan today, the Taliban reversed course on their promise to open schools for girls today, just hours after the schools had opened for the first time since the Taliban took over control of the country again, about seven months ago. The official explanation was some uncertainty about the acceptable school uniforms.
Many, however, are not buying that argument. It is common knowledge that the Taliban are not big champions of women's rights. Since taking back power, they have rolled back gains on that particular front. They had initially claimed that they would be different than they had been during the first Taliban rule in Afghanistan in the mid-90's through 2001. However, they seem to be unofficially committed to going back on their word in that regard.
Obviously, many teenage girls were completely devastated by this news. Having grown up in a post-Taliban Afghanistan, many of them apparently believed that this time, things would be different. Older women, understandably, were more skeptical.
Yet, women are not merely taking it. Many women have taken to the streets and are protesting these latest Taliban actions.
