Well, it’s official now. Barring a reversal of what many expect, Genesis has played their last concert. They finished the final show on what at least was billed as likely their final tour ever, called The Last Domino?
For what seems right now like it will indeed be their final ever concert, they received a special visit by one prominent former member of the band: Peter Gabriel. Gabriel, of course, enjoyed a very successful solo career. Before that, however, he was the frontman for Genesis in their earliest days, when they had a very distinctive sound that differed greatly from how the band would sound after his departure.
That was one of the things that I personally appreciated the most about Genesis, was just how different they sounded as the band itself evolved. The way that they sounded in the seventies, with Gabriel, was different than the way that they sounded immediately after his departure, in the early eighties. Then, there sound differed even more, as they reached a peak of popularity in the eighties and into the nineties, when they were commercially a smashing success. Their sound evolved greatly again when, temporarily, Phil Collins left the band, and was replaced by Ray Wilson. That album, Congo, was not a major commercial success. Yet, it is an album that I personally love, despite it not having received much in the way of acclaim or major success.
Since then, Genesis effectively got together for reunion tours, but the days of releasing huge albums with different sounds each time became a thing of the past. Still, producing solid quality music for as many decades as Genesis managed to do it is really something. They deserve a lot of credit.
One thing that they meant for me, personally as a fan, is how I felt different while listening to their music. Sometimes, with some of the best artists, it can change moods, literally. And Genesis was one of those musical acts that seemed capable of doing that for me. I always liked their sound growing up in the eighties, when they seemed to have a distinctive sound that was different than anything else out there at the time. Later, I got into their older stuff, and really enjoyed that, as well. Hell, I used to set my alarm in the mornings to the opening chords of “The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway.” The soft piano music building up momentum, slowly but surely, was actually a nice way to wake up. Maybe I should go back to it.
There were other albums that I really enjoyed, as well. My favorite from them is probably “Trick of the Tail,” an album that I really got into in 1997, during a trip to Washington state. When I listen to that album, it particularly evokes memories of the lush greenery that the Pacific Northwest is so well known for. Whenever I listen to that album, even after all of these years, it still gives me a very pleasant feel, and again, can change my mood. That’s the power of music, particularly really good music. And Genesis was that.
So now today, as they played what has been billed as their final show ever in London this past weekend, I wanted to acknowledge this and honor the occasion by talking a little bit about what they meant to me. That is the reason for this blog post.
Phil Collins himself seemed to verify that this was the last Genesis concert ever. He said:
“Tonight is a very special night. It’s the last stop of our tour, and it’s the last show for Genesis.”
Then, he joked:
“After tonight, we’ll all have to get real jobs.”
What a band! They will be missed.
