Pink Floyd History: Band Decides to Keep Going After Departure of Roger Waters On This Day 35 Years Ago

This is something that I posted a day ago, admittedly.

It was on this day (yesterday, I mean, March 9th) 35 years ago that Roger Waters made it known that he was leaving Pink Floyd, one of the greatest bands in history. Pink Floyd is a fascinating band, and their sound has altered greatly over time. There was the psychedelic Sid Barrett era, which was very different than the era with David Gilmour and Roger Waters at the creative head. There was the era of Dark Side of the Moon, which differed significantly from the more rock sounding Wall album, with the accompanying movie and tour.

They are just a different kind of a band. But the music is great enough, that it, and the band's legacy, continue to endure.

Pink Floyd's sound would change greatly again after Roger Waters left the band. They decided to go on. And the albums that they released after that - A Momentary Lapse in Reason and the Division Bell (as well as the Endless River, which felt to me more like an extension of the Division Bell than an album unto it's own) - also sounded radically different than what had come before.

Yet, they are one of those rare bands that I can get into each era of, even if they sound radically different from one another. There are few bands indeed that I can say that of. The Beatles, certainly. The Animals. Genesis. Led Zep, perhaps. But those are the only ones that come to mind. There are other bands where I kind of like some of their other stuff, like say, the Stones. But the stuff that they released in the eighties or nineties simply does not compare with the brilliant stuff that they released in the earlier part of the band's history, when they were at their peak.

In any case, it seemed like a good idea to honor the band's decision to carry on. There really were only two full albums after Waters left the band. But they are great albums, ones that I enjoyed then, and still listen to to this day.
