⚽️ ⚽️ Paris Saint-Germain ⚽️ ⚽️
Last weekend, PSG won a game convincingly, yet they got booed by clearly unhappy home fans at the Parc des Princes. Despite PSG winning that game, the home crowd was still pissed off after PSG had collapsed in the second half against Real Madrid to get knocked out of the UEFA tournament in the round of 16. It may well be that all of this has shaken up their confidence, judging from what happened when they took the field this weekend.
Now this weekend, PSG traveled down to Monaco for a Ligue 1 match between two of the top teams. They were handed a lopsided loss. And while it is unlikely that it will lead to a serious collapse that might threaten a Ligue 1 title that still seems a given, it nevertheless is not a good sign for the Parisians.
In some ways, PSG played well. They dominated time of possession, had more passes and greater pass completion. However, Monaco did not allow them many shots on goal, and clearly were far better at converting their opportunities than PSG was at converting their relatively few opportunities.
Of course, the result was a disappointing, and convincing, defeat.
Wissam Ben Yedder scored the first goal for Monaco in the 25th minute, giving them the early lead. Later in the game, He would get another goal later on, in the 84th, which would ice the game for Monaco against a largely lifeless and unresponsive PSG team.
Kevin Volland scored the other goal for Monaco in the 68th minute, giving Monaco the 2-0 lead at almost the midway point of the second half.
PSG still has a strong lead for first place in the Ligue 1 standings. With all teams having played 29 games, PSG has earned 65 points so far, with Marseille in second at 53 points, then Rennes trailed closely with 52 points. Nice at 50 points and Strasbourg at 48 points round off the top five in the standings. Monaco is tied for sixth place with 44 points.
