In a stunning bit of news, world number one Ashleigh Barty announced her retirement from tennis today. She is only 25 years old.
The news took the sporting world by surprise, to say the least. Barty is on top of the world right now. She is the top-ranked player in the world, a position she has held without interruption since she first rose atop the ranking late in 2019, the same year when she won her first career Grand Slam title at Roland-Garros.
Since then, Barty has held onto the number one ranking, and now has three career Grand Slam titles to her name, including the French Open, Wimbledon, and earlier this year, the Australian Open, which she won on her home soil.
She said that she had plenty of other dreams that she wanted to pursue. No word just yet on what specifically she will be pursuing in this regard.
