Update on Russian-Ukrainian War For March 21, 2022

Yesterday, BBC News reported that over three and a half million refugees have left Ukraine since the beginning of this war. Of those, well over half have gone to Ukraine's neighor, Poland. It has been estimated that Poland's capital city of Warsaw has increased it's population by a staggering 15 percent just in these past few weeks, since the war began.

Also, ten million Ukrainians - one quarter of the population- have left their homes. Surely, this is likely particularly true of those living in the most war ravaged areas in eastern Ukraine, probably particularly in cities like Mariupol and Kharkiv.

The Russians had given Mariupol to 0500 this morning to surrender. But those in charge that city refused, saying that there was "no question" about surrendering to Russians. So the city continues to receive attacks by Russians forces, despite already having been largely demolished, with an estimated 80 percent of all structures - including residential areas - having sustained serious damage. An estimated 300,000 people are still trapped there, and have been cut off from basic necessities, including food and clean water.

Among the casualties of one of the Russian military strikes in the city of Kharkiv was a Holocaust survivor. 96-year old Boris Romanchenko was killed after rocket hit the building where he lived in Kharkiv.

In Kyiv, the mayor announced a 35-hour curfew that began earlier today at 2000 local Ukrainian time, and would go through to 0700 on Wednesday morning, the 23rd. The Russians are continuing to attempt to encircle Kyiv and set up a siege, but they have not had success on that front to this point yet.

Meanwhile, a mall in the capital city of Kyiv was attacked and completely destroyed by the Russians, with as yet unknown numbers of casualties.

Ukrainian President Zelensky continues to give daily addresses urging more aid from the West, and revealing the extent of the horrors of the war visited upon his country.
