Update on the Ukrainian Invasion By Russia for March 9, 2022

Russia continues to target civilian populations. Not surprisingly, civilian casualties have mounted as a result. Yesterday, 22 people, including three children, were killed when Russia attacked a civilian target.

Today, they attacked a maternity ward and children's hospital in Mariupol. which betrayed a temporary ceasefire deal. President Zelensky called the act an "atrocity. There was a huge hole from the shelling just outside of the building, and the explosion took off a sizable chunk of the face of one side of the building.

Russian officials did admit to this attack. However, they claimed that this was not merely a children's hospital. They claimed that there were snipers on the roof, and that there was a bunker located underneath the building.

To date, an estimated two million Ukrainians have fled the country. Of those, over 1.7 million Ukrainian refugees have crossed the western border into Poland. Hungary has taken over 85,000 refugees. While other EU nations have agreed to take in Ukrainians and give them temporary shelter for up to two years, the situation in bordering nations has created a humanitarian crisis.

In eastern Ukraine, Russia continues making military gains. They seem about to take Mariupol, and to effectively cut off Ukraine's access to the Sea of Azov. They are expected to launch an attack on Odessa in the relatively near future, to try and cut off Ukraine's access to the Black Sea, and effectively make it a landlocked country.
