CFL Update for Mid-September

Alright, well I fell behind again regarding covering the Canadian Football League (CFL). I was on vacation for a good week and a half, and then did not immediately get back on the ball once I got back.

So I will try and sum up the state of the 2022 CFL season right now, as I am writing this. Then hopefully, there will be more regular coverage of what is going on in Canadian football from here on out, until the playoffs and the Gray Cup.

Presently, the two-time defending champion Winnipeg Jets remain the league's top team, and by some margin.  The last time that I covered them, they had just been handed their first stunning defeat, at home to Montreal. Since then, however, they have won three games and improved to 12-1 on the season, by far the best record in the league. You have to figure that right now, they appear to stand a good chance at winning a third Gray Cup in a row. Winnipeg just blasted Saskatchewan beneath an avalanche of points, as they won 54-20 on Saturday.

After that, the two top teams in the league are also in the West: the British Columbia Lions and Calgary Stampeders. British Columbia (BC) currently enjoys the second best record in the league at 8-3, although it should be noted that they are on a bit of a losing streak, having dropped two straight games. Calgary is right behind them at 8-4, and they are currently riding a two game winning streak. They just crushed the Elks in Edmonton, 56-28.

The only other team in the CFL with a winning record would be Toronto, at 7-5. They have been on top in the East since the beginning of the season. However, Montreal has really come on of late, and have taken three of their past four games, dating back to their upset win over the previously unbeaten Winnipeg Blue Bombers. They have positioned themselves to be the only other serious looking team in the East.

Saskatchewan also look fairly serious, although they keep slipping after a hot start to the season. They are currently 6-7, after having dropped their last two games. They had begun the season with a 4-1 record, but have since lost six of their last eight games overall.

Finally, the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and Ottawa Redblacks both are sporting 3-9 records. In the case of Ottawa, that means that they have improved as the season has worn on, recovering from a dismal 0-6 start, when they were the last winless team in the league remaining, to have gone .500 since.  Now, the team with the worst overall record would be the Edmonton Elks, who are currently 3-10, and have lost their last three straight game.

Okay, that's it for now. Hopefully by next weekend or so, I will get back to regular coverage of this CFL season.
