Great Britain Gets a New Prime Minister

Liz Truss is the new Prime Minister for Great Britain, after the Conservative Party formally chose her to the position. She took office yesterday, following the departure of now former Prime Minister Boris Johnson. Truss becomes the third female Prime Minister in British history, with Margaret Thatcher having been the first, and Teresa May having become the second much more recently (before Johnson).

Her rise to the top of British politics comes at a time when many British simply want some stability. The country has faced one adverse situation after another ever since the Brexit vote that pulled the country out of the European Union back in 2016. Since then, the details of the actual withrawal from the European Union, as well as the pandemic which hit Britain as it hit everywhere else, and numerous political scandals revolving around now former Prime Minister Johnson, has created a vacuum in stability.

At least for now, she appeared to be moving quickly to address many of Britain's most serious problems. She "immediately faced up to the enormous tasks ahead of her: curbing soaring prices, boosting the economy, easing labor unrest and fixing a national health care system burdened by long waiting lists and staff shortages."

She also is trying to establish a diverse cabinet, reflecting Britain's own diversity. Here is a summary, taken from the article by Danica Kirka and Jill Lawess (see below):

Truss quickly began appointing senior members of her Cabinet as she tackles an inbox dominated by the energy crisis triggered by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which threatens to push energy bills to unaffordable levels, shuttering businesses and leaving the nation’s poorest people shivering at home this winter.
