RIP, Suzanne Somers

Sad news to report today.

Suzanne Somers died yesterday. She was just one day shy of her 77th birthday, which would have been today.

Somers was best known for playing Chrissy Snow on Three's Company, It was one of the most popular shows of the late 70's and early 80's. Like many people of my generation, I grew up watching reruns of that show, and probably saw each episode four or five, maybe even six times. Recently, I got back into watching some episodes. Admittedly, it was shocking how many episodes felt somehow unfamiliar, even though most of the episodes were, in fact, quite similar to one another.

In any case, I appreciated Somers in her role as Chrissy Snow. She tried to stand up for equal pay, as evidently men were making ridiculously more money per episode than women were. It was a cause that, in this day and age, she likely would have received much more support for, and perhaps might have won. As it were, things were different back then. She was kept off the show at some point in Season 5, and made one last appearance, where she was kept separate from the other actors on the show. It also was her last appearance on the show, as the writers wrote her character out. Eventually, she would be replaced by Terri Alden, played by Priscilla Barnes.

Somers was also known for promoting the Thighmaster exercise machines, as well as another sitcom in the 1990's, Step by Step. She also briefly had her own talk show.

She also had battled cancer for much of her life, from skin cancer to breast cancer.

RIP, Suzanne Somers.
