Every now and again, someone will hit the nail on the head regarding certain aspects of what is going wrong with the United States. One person who seems to do this far more often than most is noted economist Robert Reich.
Now, I have posted some things from Reich before, although it admittedly has been a while. However, he really got this one absolutely dead on regarding the frankly stunning inaction by the American government - particularly Congress - and why this is evidently the case.
Until Americans get sick and tired of this utter nonsense - if they ever apparently get truly sick and tired of it enough to actually do something about it - this will continue to be the case. After all, it seems clear to most people paying attention that "lobbyists" are nothing more than special interest groups effectively paying off prominent politicians to make sure that their special interests are catered to. Yes, officially, the current in vogue term in Washington is called "lobbying." But there is another word that more aptly describes it: corruption.
In any case, below is the Tweet which Reich posted a couple of days ago, and which pretty much gets the uniquely American political gridlock, and the real reasons behind it, dead accurate.
Robert Reich @RBReich
The NRA buys off Congress. No action on guns.
The oil industry buys off Congress. No action on climate.
Insurance companies buy off Congress. No action on health care.
The list goes on...
Money in politics is the root of our dysfunction.
