Thursday Night Football - Kansas City Chiefs 19, Denver Broncos 8
Ultimately, the Chiefs won the game, which makes it now 16 straight meetings between these two teams that Kansas City has won.
However, the game did not go quite the way most people would have expected it to go. That, of course, includes me.
When I made my prediction, I expected offense to be far more prominent, and even suggested to expect a high-scoring game.
In fact, both defenses played extremely well, and dictated the tempo of the game. The Broncos defense had looked like one of the very worst in the league entering this one. But you would never know it watching this game, as they proved tough and prevented the Chiefs offense from ever really taking off. Patrick Mahomes did throw for one TD, but otherwise, KC kept having to settle for field goals.
Harrison Butker, the placekicker, proved to be the hero for Kansas City this time. He split the uprights four times. Considering the fact that the Chiefs won this by an 11-point margin, that means that Butker was basically the difference.
Still, that is not the full story. While KC was not nearly as explosive on offense as they usually are, the Broncos were horrendous on offense for most of the night. Russell Wilson, who had been playing well in a losing cause for the Broncos so far this season, had what was easily his worst game of the season. And the offense just rarely showed much life, only scoring a touchdown late in the fourth quarter. It got them briefly back into the game, bringing Denver to within 16-8. But KC managed to notch another field goal, putting the game out of reach, effectively.
With the win, the Chiefs remain hot at 5-1, earning their fith straight win. Meanwhile, the Broncos fall to 1-5, and are teetering on the edge of irrelevance already this season, even though we are still only in mid-October.
My pick: Accurate
