On This Day in History: Radio Broadcast of Orson Welles Adaptation of The War of the Worlds By H. G. Wells Causes Panic in New Jersey

This one was a bit of an odd history episode.

It was on this day back in 1938 that listeners to a radio broadcast of "The War of the Worlds" caused a bit of a panic in New Jersey, my home state. People listening to the broadcast began to panic and flee, as they took at face value the fictional news reports of an Earth landing by hostile aliens intent on starting a war against humans of Earth.

This was part of a Halloween episode of the radio series performed and broadcast live at 8 pm EST on the CBS Radio Network. The people who believed it had missed the announcement at the beginning of the broadcast that this was just a fictional work.

All of this happened on this day back in 1938.
