Earlier today, Hamas launched a number of surprise attacks all across Israel. hundreds of people died from these attacks, including innocent civilians.
Some of the images coming from Israel and the Palestinian territories were truly horrifying. One of them is a video showing a high rise building in Gaza being levelled. The images felt reminiscent of 9/11.
Now, once again, Israel is at war. Nations allied to Israel expressed outrage over the attacks and reiterated their support of the war effort. Almost all of them said that Israel has every right to defend itself.
Nations more critical of Israel had a different response. Saudi Arabia is demanding that both sides ease tensions and take care to protect innocent civilians, although they were critical of Israeli policies, implying that this was, at least in part, part of what was responsible for these attacks. Iran was even more blatant, as members of Parliament there opened their sessions with anti-Israel chants:
“Death to Israel” and “Israel will be doomed, Palestine will be the conqueror.” Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanaani said “today’s operation created a new page in the field of resistance and armed operation against occupiers,” the semiofficial ISNA news agency reported.
Any time that Israel gets involved in such conflicts, there is the distinct possibility that it could escalate quickly, and trigger a much larger, potentially global conflict.
Let's hope that this is not the case with this current conflict.
