On this day in 1056, Byzantine Empress Theodora fell ill, dying suddenly a few days later, without children to succeed the throne, thus ending the Macedonian dynasty. In 1142 on this day, with the aid of Hiawatha and Deganawidah, The Great Peacemaker, the Iroquois tribes establish the Confederation of the Haudenosaunee. Utrecht Bishop Willebrand granted Swells state justice on this day in 1230. German King Heinrich VII made his son Johan the King of Bohemia on this day in 1310.

1887 Thomas Edison received a patent for his "Kinetoscope," and moving pictures were born. 1888 Mary Ann Nicholls, considered to be Jack the Ripper's first victim, was found murdered in London. 1962 Trinidad and Tobago gained independence from Great Britain. 1980 Poland's Solidarity labor movement had its beginnings when an agreement ending a 17-day strike was signed in Gdansk. 1994 Russia officially ended its military presence in the former East Germany and the Baltic states. 1997 Princess Diana and her companion Dodi al-Fayed were killed in a car accident in Paris. 2012 Armenia severed diplomatic relations with Hungary, after the pardoning of Ramil Safarov. In 2004, Safarov was convicted of killing an Armenian soldier.

Another Shocker at the US Open, With Novak Djokovic Knocked Out of Tournament in Third Round

   

Yes, yet another shocker at the US Open!

Australian upstart Alexei Popyrin defeated Novak Djokovic in their third round match. He did it surprisingly convincingly, 6-4, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4.

Now, two of the top men, both of whom ranked among the favorites in the US Open, are out.

In some sense, this marks a certain measure of history. Djokovic will not win a Grand Slam title in this calendar year, which marks the first time since 2017, when he was plagued with injuries. More than that, however, this marks the first time since 2002 (which happens to have been the last time that I personally had gone to see matches at the US Open prior to this year) that none of the "Big Three" of Djokovic, Roger Federer (who of course is retired), or Rafael Nadal managed to win a Grand Slam title. 

Truly a new era in men's tennis.

Carlos Alcaraz Takes Early Exit at US Open by Botic van de Zandschulp

  

The current number three ranked man in tennis, Carlos Alcaraz, was just bounced out of the US Open in the second round by Botic van de Zandschulp. It already now ranks as one of the biggest upsets in US Open history.

Alcaraz did not just lose. He got dominated in straight sets, 6-1, 7-5, 6-4. If you did not know better in seeing the results, you might think that Botic van de Zandschulp was the heavy favorite. Really, you could make the argument that Alcaraz was never really in this match.

And now, it seems clear that Alcaraz, who was flying high for a few months earlier this year, and seemed at that time indestructibe and bound for another long reign atop the men's rankings, now instead has entered his most serious drought in his career as one of the elites in the game. 

Alcaraz still looked unbeatable entering and through most of the Olympics, until he lost that final match. That seemed to derail him. Since losing the Olympic Gold Medal match to Novak Djokovic, Carlos Alcaraz really has not looked the same that he did earlier this year, when he appeared dominant in winning the French Open and Wimbledon titles within weeks of one another.

In Cincinnati, a warm-up tournament for the US Open, Alcaraz lost in the first round, and showed his frustration when he smashed his racket repeatedly on the court. Now, he lost in the second round of the US Open, surely crippling, if not outright ending, any chance of finishing the year as the world number one, which he managed to do in 2022.

Guess you never know what's going to happen in sports, right? But as they say, that's why they play the game.
