On this day in 479 BCE during the Greco-Persian Wars, Persian forces led by Mardonius were routed by Pausanias, the Spartan commander of the Greek army in the Battle of Plataea. Along the with the Greek victory on the same day in the Battle of Mycale, the Persian invasion of Greece was halted. In 663 on this day, the remnants of the Korean Baekje Kingdom and their Yamato Japanese allies engaged the combined naval forces of the Tang Chinese and Silla Koreans on the Geum River in Korea. Ultimately, the outcome was a significant Tang-Silla victory, while the Japanese would not attempt another invasion of Korea until the Japanese invasions of Korea of the late 16th century. On this day in 1232, the Formulary of Adjudications was promulgated by Regent Hōjō Yasutoki. (Traditional Japanese date: August 10, 1232). The Battle of Dussindale was fought on this day in 1549, when John Dudley destroying Robert Kett's army. In 1569 on this day, Pope Pius named Cosimo I de Medici, Grand Duke of Toscane. Duke van Parma's troops occupied Antwerp on this day in 1585. On this day in 1601, Olivier van Noort completed the first Dutch exploration of the so-called New World. In 1610 on this day, Polish King Wladyslaw was crowned King of Russia. Monarch Frederik van Palts was chosen King of Bohemia on this day in 1619. The Battle at Lutter was fought on this day in 1626, with the Catholic League defeating Danish king Christian IV. In 1628 on this day, Java Sultan Agung van Mataram attacked Batavia. The Battle of Nordingen was fought on this day in 1634, Bernhard of Saxe-Weimar, lost Duchy of Francomia. "Ye Bare & Ye Cubb" was first played on this day in 1665, performed in North America (Acomac, Va). Earliest recorded hurricane in the United States hit Jamestown, Virginia, on this day in 1667. The Treaty of Nerchinsk was signed on this day in 1689 by Russia and the Qing empire. The British defeated the Americans in the Battle of Long Island on this day in 1776. On this day in 1783, the first hydrogen balloon flight (unmanned); reached 900 meters altitude. Jacques Necker was named French Minister of Finance on this day in 1788. On this day in 1798, the Battle at Castelbar, Ireland was fought, when the French army hunted the English. The English invasion army landed in North-Holland on this day in 1799.

On this day in 1813, the Battle of Dresden was fought, with Napoleon defeating the Austrians. In 1816 on this day, Lord Exmouth bombed Algiers (in present day Algeria), which had been a refuge for Barbary pirates. The Russians defeated the Ottomans at the Battle of Akhalzic on this day in 1828. Black Hawk, leader of Sauk-Indians, gave himself up on this day in 1832. On this day in 1859 was the first successful oil well drilled, near Titusville, Pennsylvania, by Edwin Drake. In 1861 during the American Civil War, the Battle of Cape Hatteras, South Carolina, was fought, with Union troops ultimately taking Fort Clark. The Battle of Cub Run, Virginia, during the American Civil War, was fought on this day in 1862. A hurricane hit Florida & the Carolinas on this day in 1881, killing about 700. Krakatoa, west of Java, exploded with a force of 1,300 megatons on this day in 1883, killing approximately 40,000 people. The NYC Metropolitan Opera House caught fire on this day in 1892. In 1894 on this day, Congress passed the Wilson-Gorman Tariff Act, which included a graduated income tax that was later struck down by the Supreme Court. On this day in 1896, Britain defeated Zanzibar in a 38-minute war (9:02 AM-9:40 AM). The Battle of Bergenda was fought on this day in 1900 during the Boer War, with British General Buller defeating Boer General Botha. Edgar Rice Burroughs published "Tarzan of the Apes" on this day in 1912. On this day in 1913, Lt Peter Nestrov, of Imperial Russian Air Service, performs a loop in a monoplane at Kiev (the first aerobatic maneuver in an airplane). 1660 - The books of John Milton were burned in London due to his attacks on King Charles II.   1789 - The Declaration of the Rights of Man was adopted by the French National Assembly.   1828 - Uruguay was formally proclaimed to be independent during preliminary talks between Brazil and Argentina.   1858 - The first cabled news dispatch was sent and was published by "The New York Sun" newspaper. The story was about the peace demands of England and France being met by China.   1859 - The first oil well was successfully drilled in the U.S. by Colonel Edwin L. Drake near Titusville, PA.   1889 - Charles G. Conn received a patent for the metal clarinet.   1889 - Boxer Jack "Nonpareil" Dempsey was defeated for the first time of his career by George LaBlanche.   1892 - The original Metropolitan Opera House in New York was seriously damaged by fire.   1894 - The Wilson-Gorman Tariff Act was passed by the U.S. Congress. The provision within for a graduated income tax was later struck down by the U.S. Supreme Court.   1921 - The owner of Acme Packing Company bought a pro football team for Green Bay, WI. J.E. Later, 47 other nations would sign the pact.   1938 - Robert Frost, in a fit of jealousy, set fire to some papers to disrupt a poetry recital by another poet, Archibald MacLeish.   1939 - Nazi Germany demanded the Polish corridor and Danzig.   1945 - American troops landed in Japan after the surrender of the Japanese government at the end of World War II.   1962 - Mariner 2 was launched by the United States. In December of the same year the spacecraft flew past Venus. It was the first space probe to reach the vicinity of another planet.   1972 - North Vietnam's major port at Haiphong saw the first bombings from U.S. warplanes.   1981 - Work began on recovering a safe from the Andrea Doria. The Andrea Doria was a luxury liner that had sank in 1956 in the waters off of Massachusetts.   1984 - U.S. President Ronald Reagan announced that the first citizen to go into space would be a teacher. The teacher that was eventually chosen was Christa McAuliffe. She died in the Challenger disaster on January 28, 1986.   1984 - Diane Sawyer became the fifth reporter on CBS-TV's "60 Minutes."   1984 - The Menetta Lane Theatre in Greenwich Village opened. It was the first new off-Broadway theater to be built in 50 years in New York City.   1985 - The Space Shuttle Discovery left for a seven-day mission in which three satellites were launched and another was repaired and redeployed.   1986 - Nolan Ryan (Houston Astros) earned his 250th career win against the Chicago Cubs.   1989 - The first U.S. commercial satellite rocket was launched. Russia was forced to abandon Mir for financial reasons.   2001 - The U.S. military announced that an Air Force RQ-1B "Predator" aircraft was lost over Iraq. It was reported that the unmanned aircraft "may have crashed or been shot down."   2001 - Work began on the future site of a World War II memorial on the U.S. capital's historic national Mall. The site is between the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial.
