The old flag of South Africa used during the days of apartheid, when the country was still ruled by a white minority government.

On this day in history, then President of apartheid South Africa P.W. Botha delivers his infamous "Rubicon" speech. The speech is named after the famous event in Roman history, because Botha declared that South Africa was "crossing the Rubicon," or the point of no return, regarding reforming the apartheid system. It had been billed as Botha preparing his country for major reforms, but he then effectively reneged on these expectations and declared that South Africa would resist pressures both internal and external and effectively continue apartheid policies, not trusting the principle of "one man, one vote" democracy and majority majority rule. As a result, South Africa became even more isolated, and the economy was severely weakened as a result.
