On this day in 612 BCE occurred the Killing of Sinsharishkun, King of Assyrian Empire. Destruction of Nineveh. In 70 on this day, the "Second Temple" of Jews was set aflame. This is the traditional date of Laylat al-Qadr back in 610, when Muhammad began to receive the Qur'an. In 654 on this day, Pope Eugene I was elected to succeed Martinus I. The Treaty of Verdun was signed on this day in 843, when brothers Lotharius I, Louis the German & Charles the Bare divided France between them. The Battle of Lechfeld was fought on this day in 955, when Otto I, King of the Germans defeated the Hungarians, ending 50 years of Magyar invasion of Western Europe. It was on this day in 991 that the Battle of Maldon took place. In that one, the English, led by Bryhtnoth, confronted a band of inland-raiding Vikings near Maldon in Essex. The English were defeated and the story is immortalised in a well-known poem. On this day in 1304 - -11], the Battle at Zierik Sea took place, when the Dutch & French fleet defeated the Flemish fleet. The Second Battle of Athenry took place on this day in 1316. It was on this day in 1461 that Alfonso ed Espina, the Bishop of Osma, urged for an Inquistion in Spain. On this day in 1497, John Cabot mistakenly told King Henry VII of his trip to "Asia." Portuguese sea captain Diego Diaz became the first European to see Madagascar on this day in 1500. In 1511 on this day, Portugese troops occupied parts of Malacca. The Battle at Brest took place on this day in 1512, with the English fleet defeating France. Magellan's 5 ships set sail to circumnavigate the world on this day in 1519. The Battle at St Quentin was fought on this day in 1557, with Lamoraal of Egmont & Philibert defeated France. Iconoclasm began on this day in 1566. English Queen Elizabeth I signed the Treaty of Nonsuch, with aid for Netherlands, on this day in 1585. County Maine was appended on John Mason/Fernandino Gorges on this day in 1622. In 1627 on this day, Cardinal Richelieu began the siege of La Rochelle. On this day in 1628, Wasa sank at Stockholm, Swweden, killing 50. There was a sea battle at Heijde on this day in 1653, with the English fleet defeating the Dutch. Austria and the Ottoman Empire signed the Peace of Vásvár on this day in 1664. On this day in 1675, King Charles II laid the foundation stone for the Royal Observatory, Greenwich. A Portuguese-Jewish synagogue opened in Amsterdam on this day in 1675. Netherlands & France signed a peace treaty in Nijmegen on this day inm 1678. In 1680 on this day in New Mexico, Popé led a rebellion of Pueblo Indians against the Spaniads. On this day in 1743, the earliest recorded prize fighting rules were formulated. Carlos III became the King of Spain on this day in 1759. In 1774 on this day, the first Surinam newspaper (1st Wednesday Suriname) began publishing. On this day in 1776 during the American Revolutionary War, London received the message that the American colonies had declared independence. Mozart completed "Eine small Nachtmusik" on this day in 1787. The Ottoma Empire declared war on Russia on this day in 1787. In 1790 on this day, Robert Gray's Columbia completed the first American around world voyage. On this day in 1792 during the French Revolution, mobs in Paris attacked the palace of Louis XVI. In 1809 on this day, Ecuador declared independence from Spain (National Day). Missouri was admitted as the 24th US state on this day in 1821. On this day in 1822, Antioch, Syria, was hit by a massive earthquake; with about 20,000 killed. There were race riots in Cincinnati on this day in 1827, resulting in approximately one thousand blacks departing for Canada in the aftermath. Former slave Nat Turner led an uprising against slavery on this day in 1831. In 1831 on this day, a hurricane hit Barbados; with about 1,500 dead. Chicago was incorporated as a village of about 200 on this day in 1833. It has grown just a smidge in population since. In 1835 on this day, a mob of whites & oxen pulled Noyes Academy, a black school, off of it's foundation and dragged it for miles into a swamp out of Canaan New Hampshire. Congress chartered the "nation's attic," the Smithsonian Institution, on this day in 1846. On this day in 1856, a hurricane washed away 2-300 revelers at Last Island, Louisiana. The Battle of Wilson's Creek, Missouri (Springfield, Oak Hills) during the American Civil War, was fought on this day in 1861, with General Lyon killed. The Battle of Nueces River, Texas, was fought on this day in 1862. Transatlantic cable was laid on this day in 1866, President Buchanan spoke to Queen Victoria. O B Brown patented the moving picture projector on this day in 1869. On this day in 1876, the first phone call between Brantford & Paris, Canada. It was on this day in 1877 at the Big Hole River massacre, when Colonel John Gibbon murdered Nez-Perce Indians. Leo Daft opened America's first commercial operated electric streetcar in Baltimore, Maryland, on this day in 1885. On this day in 1887, an excursion train crashed in Chatsworth, Illinois, killing 101. Dan Rylands patented the screw cap on this day in 1889. Chinese were deported from San Francisco under the Exclusion Act on this day in 1893. The first Queen's Hall Promenade Concerto (Wagners "Rienzi") was held on this day in 1895. In 1897 on this day, the Automobile Club of Great Britain was established (now: Royal Auto Club).




 The victorious powers of the Great War recognized Poland, Romania, and Czechoslovakia. Franklin Delano Roosevelt was struck by polio at his summer residence in Campobello, New Brunswick. In 1943 on this day, Patton called an injured soldier "cowardly", and was later reprimanded for it by Eisenhower. On the same day, Hitler watched Allied bombers get lynched. The United States reclaimed Guam from Japan. One year later Japan agreed, at least in principle, to unconditional surrender, following the two atomic bombs that were dropped at Hiroshima and Nagasaki. David Berkowitz was arrested on this day in 1977, accused of being the infamous killer, "Son of Sam". There was a massacre of over one hundred Muslims in Sri Lanka. American Presidential candidate form the Republican Party, Bob Dole, picked former NFL star quarterback Jack Kemp as his running mate in 1996, in an ill-fated campaign.

He was executed the following January after being put on trial for treason.    1809 - Ecuador began its fight for independence from Spain.    1821 - Missouri became the 24th state to join the Union.    1846 - The Smithsonian Institution was chartered by the U.S. Congress. The "Nation's Attic" was made possible by $500,000 given by scientist Joseph Smithson.    1859 - In Boston, MA, the first milk inspectors were appointed.    1869 - The motion picture projector was patented by O.B. Brown.    1881 - Thomas Edison's exhibit opened the Paris Electrical Exhibition.    1885 - The first electric streetcar, to be used commercially, was operated in Baltimore, MD, by Leo Daft.    1914 - Austria-Hungary invaded Russia.    1921 - Franklin D. Roosevelt was stricken with polio.    1927 - Mount Rushmore was formally dedicated. The individual faces of the presidents were dedicated later.    1944 - U.S. forces defeated the remaining Japanese resistance on Guam.    1945 - The day after the atomic bombing of Nagasaki, Japan announced they would surrender. The only condition was that the status of Emperor Hirohito would remain unchanged.    1947 - William Odom completed an around-the-world flight. He set the solo record by completing the flight in 73 hours and 5 minutes.    1948 - On ABC, "Candid Camera" made its TV debut. The original title was "Candid Microphone."    1949 - In the U.S., the National Military Establishment had its name changed to the Department of Defense.    1954 - Construction began on the St. Lawrence Seaway.    1965 - In Austin, TX, a fire burned part of the 20th floor of the 27-story University of Texas main building. A collection that contained items once owned by escape artist Harry Houdini and circus magnate P. T. Barnum were damaged by smoke and water.    1973 - Arnold Palmer did not make the cut for the final two rounds of the PGA Golf Championship. It was the first time in his career.    1981 - Pete Rose hit a single and broke the National League all-time hit record with his 3,630 hit.    1988 - U.S. President Reagan signed a measure that provided $20,000 payments to Japanese-Americans who were interned by the U.S. government during World War II.    1993 - A massive deficit-reduction bill was signed into law by U.S. President Bill Clinton.    1994 - U.S. President Clinton claimed presidential immunity when he asked a federal judge to dismiss, at least for the time being, a sexual harassment lawsuit filed by Paula Corbin Jones.    1995 - Norma McCorvey, "Jane Roe" of the 1973 U.S. Supreme Court decision legalizing abortion, announced that she had joined the anti-abortion group Operation Rescue.    1999 - Near an India-Pakistan border area an Indian fighter jet shot down a Pakistani naval aircraft. Sixteen people were killed.    2003 - Ekaterina Dmitriev and Russian cosmonaut Yuri Malenchenko were married. Malenchenko was about 240 miles above the earth in the international space station. It was the first-ever marriage from space.
