Sometimes, the world seems to be going to hell in a hand basket. Right now, we are living in such a time.
Of course, there have been dire times before, as well. The Black Plague wiped out a huge percentage of the population of much of Europe. Columbus "discovered" America, and viewed the Native Americans there as good material for slavery, and then Europeans brought diseases with them that wiped out a huge percentage of the Native American population. We have seen slavery and ridiculous wars and massacres on just about every continent.
More recently, we have seen dark times, as well. We have seen bullies march in lock step in support of a madman who started the deadliest war in all of human history. We have seen a number of genocides of whole groups of people, and some leaders seemed intent on outdoing one another in ways of making their people suffer. We have seen concentration camps invented by the British in South Africa that wiped out a large percentage of Afrikaners, and concentration camps then spread around the world. We have seen Gulags, and Nazi death camps. Other such camps have been found in other countries, including (but not necessarily limited to) China, North Korea, and Syria. Syria just saw the end of a war that tore that nation apart, and now Yemen is going through the same thing.
Just a few days ago, there was an unbelievable mass shooting in New Zealand, when a white supremacist when to a couple of mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand, and mercilessly gunned down Muslims. We Americans have seen similar acts of hatred and unbelievable violence here as well in recent years, and many people feel that this hatred is reaching a point of immediate crisis.
Sometimes, leaders can bring perspective to tragedies, and begin to help us pick up the pieces and make sense of the world.
What did President Trump do this weekend, after that massacre in New Zealand?
Well, let's see...he tweeted petty and hateful messages about how he has allegedly been victimized by the Mueller investigation and the allegations of Russian collusion. He showed no class in attacking a now dead political rival.
And, of course, he threatened a comedy show.
It should be noted that humor can really help heal wounds. It reminds us to be able to laugh at ourselves, and not take ourselves too seriously. But Trump never got that memo. Of course, Trump has no sense of humor, unless he is specifically targeting other people and trying to humiliate or hurt them, which is what he does best.
Yes, Trump has voiced his displeasure with Saturday Night Live (SNL) before, but apparently, he is getting serious now. He threatened a federal investigation into SNL for poking fun at him, something that he feels is unfair.
And this is the guy who's supporters accuse everyone else who is critical of him of being delicate little "snowflakes?"
Is it not amazing that this guy apparently has nothing better to do with his time than to watch comedy shows that he himself has complained are unfunny, and then tweet about them afterward? And this, just days after a horrific mass shooting that should have gotten his attention quite a bit more than it did.
But then again, this is the guy who promised that he would be too busy to play golf if he got elected into the White House, yet has hardly missed an opportunity to play a round of golf whenever he feels he can get away with it, which is just about every weekend.
For their part, SNL handled it quite well, and with their trademark humor. NBC announced that they will be issuing a "Trump Trigger Warning" before the airing of future SNL broadcasts.
That's pretty funny! And it is fitting that we are talking about the melting of a big, ugly, orange snowflake right as spring approaches!
