Jello Biafra Officially Warns Possible Consumers Before Buying New "Fresh Fruit" Remix Album

Jello Biafra, the former frontman of the legendary punk band Dead Kennedys, is warning those who are thinking of getting the new remixed DK album "Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables." It is set to be released later this year, in September.

Biafra made it clear that this was done behind his back, and without his approval. Plus, he does not like it, feeling that it detracts from the raw punk power of the original release.

Still, it is being built up by the official band (again, with the notable detractions by Jello Biafra) as being way better and far clearer than the original album was. In other words, it is being highly regarded, at least by those who are releasing it.

Does it live up to it's billing? Here are Jello's own words on the matter. This is a snippet of his response taken from the much longer, official response, where he makes it clear whether or not this new version is as good as the original, or perhaps even better:

I don’t think so! What does that even mean, anyway? I hate to say this, but to me it’s….well….kinda boring.

Sure, the sound is a little fuller, a little warmer, with a little more bottom end. But the top-end presence and power, so crucial to full-on in your face Punk, sounds rolled off and smoothed over, even muffly.

And East Bay Ray, whose ego knows no bounds, actually turned his guitars DOWN! They’re lower and a little muddier than the real thing. It just sounds weak to me, I’m sorry.

At some point, Biafra actually recommends some of the versions that, in his opinion, offer an actual, better version of the album.

So, there you have it. Jello and the Dead Kennedys (the official band sans Jello Biafra, in any case) are still at war. Presumably, Biafra would stand to gain some money if this particular album does well. But he is making it clear that, in his opinion, this album does not maintain the integrity and raw edge of the original album. Interesting stuff.
