Despite numerous and clear reports of witness tampering by Team Trump throughout these whole January 6th proceedings, they somehow continue to remain seemingly immune from consequences.
This feels like we are witnessing, once again, another clear sign of the erosion of the pillars of our American democracy, or what remains of it. Again, Trump specifically seems to always find ways of getting away with truly awful and outright criminal, transparently corrupt behavior. Time and time again, throughout his career, he has gotten away with it. That in and of itself would be a sign of the limitations, and thus some of the failures, of the American justice system.
However, now that Trump has reached the White House, and has continued to conduct himself in what can only be considered very transparently criminal conduct, there really should be consequences. The fact that, so far, there has been nothing in the way of consequences does not bode well. Even if Trump does meet his day of accountability, you can bet that there are a number of like-minded crooks who are watching all of this, and learning that there seems to be a sizable stomach that Americans now have for blatant corruption and obvious grabs for more and more power.
Indeed, the similarities to the corruption and decadence that resulted in the end of the Roman Empire (at least in western Europe, although it continued with the so-called Byzantine Empire) can hardly be exaggerated. This does indeed feel like we are witnessing the end of something important in our country's history. In fact, it has been decades in the making, but it feels like democracy itself is now on the verge of being plunged into the abyss. That is especially true if Trump gets away with this, and if someday, he gets back into the White House. If democracy was in danger the first time that he won the presidency, it may very well be over the second time.
Let's hope that Trump finally is held accountable. However, I will not be holding my breath. Even Glenn Kirschner, who has remained strangely optimistic about the ability of justice to finally hold Trump accountable, is showing signs of clear frustration now.
