Today marks the 35th anniversary of a truly great album!
Yes, it was 35 years ago on this day back in 1987 that Guns 'n Roses released their great debut album "Appetite for Destruction." It was not long before the band, off the strength of that particular album, would rise to be the biggest band in the world, a crown they mostly kept until the rise of alternative music, particularly the so-called "Seattle sound" grunge bands of the early nineties.
While I admittedly have not always been the biggest fan of this band - particularly the lead singer, Axl Rose - I nevertheless tip my hat off to them for having made some great music over the years. There is not one album that they have made which I did not enjoy, and that includes both Use Your Illusion albums as well as Chinese Democracy. I even took my son to see them at Giants Stadium last year, 29 years after seeing them with Metallica and Faith No More for the very first time back in the summer of 1992. But the very best album that they ever produced was that very first one. "Appetite for Destruction" did more than just put them on the map. It was so good - literally every track on it is solid - that it made them legitimate rock legends. And it all began 35 years ago today!
