Toronto Blue Jays Enjoy Historic Road Win in Boston

Rarely do I post blog entries about baseball, admittedly. Usually, it happens maybe around the time of the World Series. But not being the biggest fan of baseball, I just really rarely pay close attention to the sport.

However, something happened last night that was worth noting for my de facto favorite baseball team, the Toronto Blue Jays. They went into Fenway Park in Boston and absolutely pounded the Boston Red Sox, 28-5. In the process, they established all sorts of franchise records, not least of which was that this win was the most lopsided victory in franchise history.

They also made Major League Baseball (MLB) history in some other ways, as well. Yesterday's game was the first time that any MLB team accomplished all of these things in the same game:

  • They scored 28 runs on the road
  • They hit an inside-the-park grand slam
  • They hit for the home run cycle as a team
  • Lourdes Gurriel, Jr. had 6 hits in a 9-inning game

Also, every single Blue Jays starter had at least two hits. That is just the second time in over 120 years that any team managed to do that in a single game. Lourdes Gurriel Jr. tied Frank Catalanotto's franchise record with six hits in one game. It was just that kind of a night for Toronto. As Kyle Hightower noted in his article (see link below):

Danny Jansen homered twice and drove in six runs. Matt Chapman and Teoscar Hernandez added solo homers for Toronto, which topped its previous single-game mark of 24 runs set June 26, 1978 against the Baltimore Orioles.

Prior to last night, the most runs the Boston Red Sox had ever given up in a single game was 27 to Cleveland all the way back in 1923.

Wow! What a game for the Toronto Blue Jays!
