Today is an important date in the history of "Seattle sound" music. It is the birthday of Pearl Jam guitarist Stone Gossard, and it would have been the birthday of the late Chris Cornell, the frontman for Soundgarden and Audioslave, who also enjoyed a successful solo career as well.
Gossard celebrated his 56th birthday today. He was a member of Green River and Mother Lovebone, the two bands that predated Pearl Jam.
Cornell would also have turned 58 years old today. Obviously, he was well known in the music industry. It began with Soundgarden and eventually Audioslave, but he also was great in his solo stuff. Plus, he also did some other stuff, including an album with Temple of the Dog, the makeshift band with member of Pearl Jam (including Stone Gossard) that was a tribute to the then late Andy Wood, the frontman for Mother Lovebone, which was about to hit it big. Cornell had other collaborative works as well, such as with the Zac Brown Band, with which he enjoyed a hit.
I have seen both men a number of times in concert in the past. Once, I even saw them together on the same night, with the same band. That was when I took my son to Madison Square Garden to see Temple of the Dog. My son and I really kind of bonded with the music of Chris Cornell, and that wound up being the first, and unfortunately the last, time we got to see Cornell together, as he would be dead a little more than half a year later. But I saw him also with Soundgarden, Audioslave, and during one solo show. As for Stone Gossard, I saw him many times also, with Pearl Jam, and that one time, again, with Temple of the Dog.
At the solo acoustic show with Cornell in Reading, Pennsylvania, I was actually able to take a couple of really cool pictures of Cornell in concert. They are some of the best concert pics that I have ever managed to take, and it seemed like a good idea to share them here. So, here they are, in remembering Cornell and the great music that he gave us.
