CFL Update for July 18 2022

Time for another update with the Canadian Football League (CFL).

This was week 6, and we had the biggest showdown to date in the 2022 CFL season. That was between the hometown defending champion Winnipeg Blue Bombers and the visiting Calgary Stampeders. Calgary entered this game with a perfect 4-0 record, while Winnipeg was trying to maintain their perfect 5-0 record. Not only were these two teams the last remaining unbeaten teams, but combined, they have won the last three Grey Cup championships. So it was a big showdown.

Ultimately, the Blue Bombers won it in a truly entertaining thriller. However, I already posted a blog entry on it. Here it is, if you would like to take a look:

However, there were other games, as well.

The night before the big showdown between the unbeatens, the Montreal Alouettes hosted the Edmonton Elks, in what proved to be another close and highly entertaining contest. The Elks won only their second game of the season to improve to 2-4 overall with the win. The Alouettes, meanwhile, fell to 1-4 on the year, with a second straight defeat.

On Saturday, the Toronto Argonauts hosted the Saskatchewan Roughriders, who came in with an impressive 4-1 record. In another entertaining games, the Argonauts were able to hold and earn only their second win on the year, while handing the Roughriders their second loss of the season. At least for the moment, Toronto now is comfortably ahead in the East Division, which has been the weakest division in the CFL now for a few years.

Finally on Sunday, there was a battle between the two last winless teams remaining in the league. The 0-4 Hamilton Tiger-Cats hosted the also 0-4 Ottawa Redblacks. So far this season, Hamilton has had the worst defense in the league. However, they held on in another close game, earning a tight 25-23 victory, their first win of the year. It was a back and forth affair, with both teams having some chances. But the Tiger-Cats did just enough to hang on for the win, leaving the Redblacks as the sole remaining winless team in the league this season.

Looking ahead towards Week 7, the Redblacks will look to notch their first win when they host Montreal this Thursday. Then, the Tiger-Cats will visit the Lions in Vancouver later on Thursday evening. On Friday, the defending champion Blue Bombers will look to remain perfect when they go on the road and visit the Elks up in Edmonton. Finally, the Argonauts and Roughriders will have a rematch of last week's game, this time in Saskatchewan.

Let's see what happens. Should be interesting!
