This happens to be a very important anniversary in the history of the Beatles. Arguably, in fact, this date was the most important date in Beatles history, in fact, because it was the very beginning, the genesis, of what would prove to be an incredible chapter in music history.

It was on this day back in 1957 that John Lennon first met Paul McCartney through a friend. John played some songs on a guitar. Paul said that his guitar was out of tune. John told him to tune it, which Paul did. That was the beginning of some amazing musical history.

Paul McCartney, then only 15 years old, played Eddie Cochran's "Twenty Flight Rock." So impressed was the then16-year-old John Lennon, that they formed a musical bond that would last. Soon, they formed the Quarrymen with George Harrison. Eventually, they would famously change their name to The Beatles. Clearly, everyone pretty much knows who the Beatles are. And it all began on this day back in 1957, when the two met, almost seemingly by chance.

McCartney himself recalled the meeting decades later:

In the documentary The Beatles Anthology, McCartney remembers the spectacle of Lennon strutting around in a checked shirt, "and sort of blondish kind of hair, little bit curly, [sideburns], looking pretty cool. And he was playing one of these guitars — guaranteed not to crack, not a very good one — but he was making a very good job of it."

The Quarrymen performed "Come Go With Me" by The Del-Vikings, and though Lennon clearly didn't know the words, he adapted lyrics from blues songs instead. That ingenuity impressed McCartney, who met Lennon after the set. Backstage, McCartney played Eddie Cochran's "Twenty Flight Rock," which in turn impressed Lennon — perhaps in part because McCartney actually knew all the lyrics.

Lennon was very impressed. As mentioned, it was perhaps especially because McCartney remembered all of the lyrics to the song, something that Lennon himself had not managed to do, opting instead to improvise.

What a fateful day that was.

And it happened on this day back in 1957, 65 years ago today!
