CFL Update for the Weekend of September 26 - 27th

    

Edmonton 37, Hamilton 35 - In a tightly fought shootout, the Edmonton Elks finally came out the winners. Still, it took until the final play of the game to do it on what was a wild, back and forth contest. Both teams can come away from this one feeling good about how they played, although the loss proved quite costly for the Tigercats. With the win, Edmonton improves to 11-4 on the season, as they get ever closer to clinching the West Division. Meanwhile, Hamilton falls to 4-11 on the year, and their relatively slim playoff hopes are flickering more than ever.

Calgary 45, Ottawa 31 - Unlike the game in Calgary that these two teams played a week earlier, this one did not come down to the wire. In fact, the Stampeders won more decisively, eliminating the suspense well before the final seconds. The end result, of course, was a win for the Stampeders, who remain very much in the hunt for a playoff spot. But it was yet another loss for Ottawa, as their winless start this season has entered truly historical levels. The Ottawa Redblacks were hoping to come back home and avenge that heartbreaker last weekend and, in the process, finally end this horrific winless start. Instead, they lose yet another game and fall to 0-14 on the year now.  That matches the 1994 Shreveport Pirates for the worst start in the history of the modern CFL. Even worse, it extends Ottawa's losing streak now to 19 straight, dating back to their last win back on Sept 3, 2025 against the BC Lions. Yes, that was well over a year ago now, as it will very shortly be October. It is not yet the longest losing streak in CFL history, as their predecessors, the Ottawa Rough Riders, hold that record, having lost 25 straight from 1928 to 1932. Calgary, meanwhile, improves to 7-8 on the year, helping them to remain relatively competitive in the West Division, despite the losing record.

Toronto 30, Winnipeg 28 - This was a game between two teams desperately fighting to try and qualify for the postseason. In truth, Toronto's chances for reaching the playoffs seem very favorable, to the point where it would indeed be shocking if they did not reach the postseason. They helped those chances by holding on for the win in a very tough contest against the Blue Bombers here. With the win, Toronto now improves to 9-6 on the year, although they remain 2 1/2 games behind the Alouettes in the East Division. As for Blue Bombers, they fall to 7-7 on the year, as they remain in fourth place overall in the Wes Division. 

British Columbia 31, Saskatchewan 24 - The BC Lions are the CFL's hottest team currently. It did not start out quite that way for them this season, as they sank to close to the bottom of the league with a dismal 1-5 start. However, they have now won seven of their last eight games and improved to 8-6, now tying their opponents, the Roughriders, for second place overall in the West Division. A solid win for the Lions, while Saskatchewan, once a seeming elite team earlier this season, have to be careful to try and stop the bleeding before the playoffs - which once seemed like a sure thing - suddenly become something they are in serious danger of missing out on.
