CFL Update: Weekend of September 12, 2026

  

British Columbia 48, Montreal 29 - Just a few weeks ago, the Montreal Alouettes were 9-1 and they alone enjoyed the best record in the league. Now, they have dropped two of their last three and are tied with Edmonton for the best overall record in the league. One bit of good news for them: they are still perfect at home at 7-0. However, they are only .500 away from home, with a 3-3 record on the road. That likely needs to improve if they hope to still be the top overall team in the CFL. As for British Columbia, they avenge their earlier loss at Montreal last weekend with a convincing win in Vancouver. With the win, they improve to 7-6 and along with Winnipeg, remain one game behind second place Saskatchewan.

Edmonton 53, Calgary 16 - The latest episode of the Battle of Alberta for the CFL was not much of a battle. The Edmonton Eskimos were probably the hottest team in the CFL, having won three straight. Meanwhile, Calgary has been suffering through an up and down season. And this game went the way you might have expected, only more extreme. Yes, Edmonton won, but they put up a whopping 53 points on the Stampeders, who were completely and utterly overwhelmed. It was only 19-10 in favor of the Elks by halftime, but they completely took over the game in the second half, earning their second straight win over the Stampeders. With the win, they improve to 10-3 and are now tied with the Alouettes for the best overall record in the CFL, and a fairly comfortable two games ahead of Saskatchewan in the West, as the Roughriders also lost to more fully accommodate Edmonton's great weekend. As for the Stampeders, they drop their second straight to Edmonton in as many weeks, falling to 5-8 and now well in sole possession of last place in the West Division. Every other team there has a winning record, while Calgary looks like they will need some serious help to qualify for the postseason.

Winnipeg 19, Saskatchewan 6 - The Blue Bombers knocked the Roughriders down a peg, earning a solid 19-6 win when they needed it the most. Saskatchewan had been two games up on Winnipeg in this game, and had a chance to separate themselves (along with first place Edmonton) in the standings with a win. But the Blue Bombers played well, particularly on defense. Saskatchewan was restricted to a mere two field goals total, while the Blue Bombers scored 10 points in the second quarter alone, and added more for comfort in the second half. With the win, the Blue Bombers improve to 7-6, and now are only one game behind Saskatchewan, who drop to 8-5 on the year.

Toronto 26, Ottawa 23 - The Ottawa Redblacks fought hard and came fairly close to pulling off a major upset in this one. Yet, they fell short and remain the CFL's only remaining winless team at 0-12. Still, the Redblacks came closer in this one than they have in any game since a July game against Winnipeg. They did a lot right and nearly got that first, difficult win under their belt. Nevertheless, Toronto earned their second straight win with this one, and now have a winning record at 7-6.
