Les Canadiens de Montréal
About one year ago, I was very excited about the hugely successful postseason run enjoyed by the Montréal Canadiens. They overcame a 3-1 series deficit against the Toronto Maple Leafs to win that series, and then swept past the Winnipeg Jets. They then defeated the Las Vegas Golden Knights to qualify for the Stanley Cup Finals for the first time since 1993. Unfortunately, they kind of ran into a brick wall once there, as the defending Stanley Cup champion Lightning proved to be a bit too much for the Canadiens. Still, many fans, myself included, felt grateful.
However, that was then, and this is now. This was not a good season at all for the Habs. They were literally the worst team in the Eastern Conference all season long, and it was not even close. In fact, they had the least amount of both points and wins, and were tied with the expansion Seattle Kraken for second most losses of any team (the Phoenix Coyotes had 50, to 49 for the Canadiens and Kraken). So, it was obviously a horrendous season for them. They went from the cusp of greatness, and being a serious contender to be the best team in the league, the champions, to all but officially eliminated by the midseason point. There was never a point where they came alive, where the season just took off. They got off to an awful start, and then kind of just stayed there. It was frustrating to see them go from so good to so bad.
Still, it was not all terrible. As it turns out, goalie Carey Price just received the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy. This trophy is presented to the player who showed the best qualities of perseverance and sportsmanship. Price made clear during the press conference that he thought of this as a tremendous honor.
