French Open Women's Final: Iga Świątek Defeats Coco Gauff For Second Career Grand Slam Title

Roland Garros/French Open

Women's Final:

Iga Świątek vs. Coco Gauff

The number one ranked woman in the world, Iga Świątek of Poland defeated Coco Gauff of the United States in the French Open Women's Final earlier today. Gauff, the18th ranked woman in the world, was making her first ever Grand Slam final appearance. However, Świątek proved to be just too much. She raced off to an incredibly fast start, quickly winning the first set, then overcoming an early break and 0-2 deficit in the second set. Ultimately, Świątek defeated Gauff, 6-1, 6-3.

Despite being the number one ranked woman in the world, Świątek was actually only making her second ever appearance at a Grand Slam final. She won the French Open two years ago, and now has won her second ever French Open, solidifying her hold on the top ranking, at least for the moment. She was only 19 when she first won here at Roland Garros, and is still only 21. But she now has two French Open titles, as well as the number one ranking, to her name.

As for Gauff, this tournament was the most successful Grand Slam she ever enjoyed, allowing her to make her first ever appearance at a Grand Slam final in singles play, although she reached the final at both the French Open (this year) and the US Open (2021) in doubles play.
