It was 30 years ago yesterday, on September 14, 1993,that the Counting Crows released their huge album, "August and Everything After" on Geffen Record.
By early 1994, the first and biggest hit from the album, "Mr. Jones," was dominating the airwaves on many, if not most, radio stations. It was on the classic rock stations, the alternative stations, the pop stations. It was everywhere.
Soon, other hits would enjoy prominent airplay, as well. One of them, "Round Here," I did not care for so much back then, thinking it a bit tame. Ironically, this son has become a favorite in my older age, while "Mr. Jones," a song that I really loved early on, and which turned me onto the Counting Crows to begin with, is one that I rarely listen to with too much excitement anymore.
In any case, it was a great album, with a lot of great songs. "Omaha" is another favorite. This is a band that lends a distinctive, almost lazy and melancholy feel to much of their music. it is reflective and often thought-provoking, which is of course one of the main reasons why I like it.
