43 Years Ago Today, Punk Band Dead Kennedys Release 'Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables'

This was posted earlier today on Facebook, but is actually quite late.

In fact, the album's release date, according to Wikipedia, was September 2, 1980. Unfortunately, I did not know that at the time.

Still, better late than never, right?

This was a great album, and one that proved iconic for the legendary (and now unfortunately long defunct) punk band.

Here is the post by Sonemic on the Alternative Tentacles Facebook page that I discovered about the anniversary of the release of this historic album:

On this date in 1980, Dead Kennedys - 'Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables' was released. 📈 #3 for 1980, #245 overall

"The Dead Kennedys here really concretize that concept of ‘California punk’ — louder, briefer, more irreverent and messier than either the style’s New York roots, or the significant and lengthy period of English renaissance that defined the close of the musical '70s. It would be extremely tired to go back through the usual recipe, but, naturally, the Kennedys are revisiting ‘garage’ by way of Brill or Motown.  ...

One feels a real genuine degree of effort made in the sequencing of the record, an understanding that frontloading is a poor policy...Tracks are kept brief and immediate, with only two making it over three minutes in length...Notable tracks follow in a similar messy, warbly, cynical vein...It is particularly impressive how infernally catchy and persistently melodic ‘Fresh Fruit...’ manages to be through all that sound, fury, and perpetual brow-arching."
