Well, it's a done deal now.
Truth be told, as soon as Trump won the last election, I knew that it was going to be a very long four years, at least in terms of political developments. That the United States had effectively voted to go backwards and undo much of the progress that it made in the past fifty years to a century. That of course includes democracy itself. We're seeing it happen right before our eyes, when cruelty and inhumanity is being celebrated and even joked about, such as with the recent construction of the "Alligator Alcatraz" prison camp in Florida. Good Evangelical Christians are enjoying the idea of people - Laura Loomer estimated that it would be 65 million people - suffering in the extreme Florida heat and being eaten alive by mosquitos and possibly alligators, if they try to escape. Because you know, Jesus certainly would approve of such behavior, right?
But I digress...
Yes, there were going to be steps backwards. Massive steps backwards. After all, it's even in MAGA's slogan, isn't it? Making America Great Again implies turning back the clock in some way, shape or form. Even if the world is a different place. Even if what once worked in the past, in a different world and under very different circumstances, simply might not work now.
They are clearly going to try to force their way to impose these changes. And that's not surprising. Obviously, we could expect nothing less.
So unlike many others, I held no real expectations that this "Big, Beautiful Bill" would pass. I mean, come on. The Republicans have become the de facto Trump party. And right now, they hold the White House, the Senate, the House, and the Supreme Court. We can fight, but you have to know that they are going to have some political successes, right?
What's aggravating to me is that many Republicans aren't even bothering justifying their support of the bill. One or two of them even admitted that there was very little in the bill that they actually liked or which would do good for the country. Yet, they voted in favor of it.
Sickening.
Such times we live in.
This bill is a disaster. At a time when the wealthiest Americans have never had it so good, even while more Americans are sliding ever closer to the edge of an abyss, this bill will give the wealthiest and most privileged Americans still more. There are tax cuts, but these will disproportionately benefit the wealthiest Americans. All very predictable. And to that end, many Americans will lose their benefits, including health insurance and food programs. It literally will likely cost people their lives.
Oh, and it will add $3 trillion to the national debt, which Trump once promised to pay off in eight years. Keep in mind that when Trump first took power in January of 2017, we had an estimated $19.9 trillion in debt. By the time that he left office after his first four years, that had ballooned to over $25 trillion. He added over 25% to the national debt in just four years!
Now, he is adding still another $3 trillion. And once again, it's so that he and elites like him can pay even less taxes than they do now.
Disgusting.
Maybe it's time to make the rich fearful of the rest of us again.
