Almost forgot about this one.
Here is another never published blog entry about Stephen Hawking. This one is about an article in which he said that most of human history is "the history of stupidity."
Hard to disagree with him there, frankly. Keep in mind that the article was from October of 2016, just before the United States made possibly the biggest mistake in national history and elected Donald Trump into the White House. It was also the same year as Brexit. Both of those are both political things, but they seem to embody the nature of how humanity does things that have real ramifications, and often for stupid reasons. In Britain, part of the reason why the outcome went the way that it went was that it was a very rainy day, and apparently many people did not feel it was worth inconveniencing themselves, and so never bothered showing up. Also, the top Google search in Britain the day after the election was "What is Brexit?"
As for Trump, I'm not even going to get into all of that right now.
In any case, Hawking mentioned this about all of recorded human history.
Here, specifically, is what he said:
"We spend a great deal of time studying history," Hawking told the lecture, "which, let's face it, is mostly the history of stupidity."
But despite all our time spent looking back at past errors, we seem to make the same mistakes over and over again.
"So it's a welcome change that people are studying instead the future of intelligence," he explained.
At least he tried to end on a positive note, right? We probably should be focusing on the future more than studying our past, although it seems important to understand and, most importantly, learn from the mistakes of the past. And yes, human history does indeed feel like a history of stupidity.
I mean, can you even argue this point if you wanted to? Yes, I know it's a bummer and depressing to think about. But isn't that the case with human history in general as well? Doesn't that tell us something? It should, in any case.
Take a look at the article (linked below) which expands a bit on what, specifically, he said:
