How bad is it getting that things like this no longer even really feel all that surprising anymore?
Kyle Langford, the man who is currently leading the GOP field in the California gubernatorial race just posted a picture of himself in front of the gates at Auschwitz. He suggested that it was a solution for homelessness, and then added these words:
My 0% Unemployment Plan
Guess this was supposed to pass for humorous. If you take offense, he and people who enjoyed this would surely. claim that it is merely a harmless joke. That you are a "woke" libtard or a fascist advocate of "cancel culture" if you object.
In truth, however, this is actually shocking and outrageous.
To me, it also feels a bit like a coded message. One that more or less feels like it conveys the following message to racists and fascists:
Hey, this is just a joke. All in good fun, right? But wink, wink, I really am also a racist and admire what Hitler and the Nazis did in Germany. We cannot outright declare that this is what we intend for this country just yet, but we are getting closer to finally making this a reality. Vote for me, and I will bring this country that much closer to this.
That's how I see it. Frankly, I don't really see any other way to see it.
Auschwitz Memorial @AuschwitzMuseum
The instrumentalization of the tragedy of all those imprisoned and murdered in the German Nazi concentration and extermination camp Auschwitz for political messaging is a profound moral failure. Auschwitz is not a prop. @KyleLangfordCA , your post is an affront to the dignity of the victims and a disturbing display of insensitivity and disregard to horryfying human history.
