Nebraska Farmers Have Been Hurt By Trump's Policies, But Will They Hold Him Accountable?

This is a picture of a magnet that was being sold at Strand's Book Store in New York City a few years ago. No, I did not buy it, but I liked it and took a picture, which I am sharing here now.

There's an expression which began floating around the internet just a few years ago. It usually pertains to the political realities of the United States, although it is a little bit crass. Still, it seems like you see it often these days, and it also seems like both sides are using it (although it was leftists who seemed to use it first, particularly when Democrats were trying to rob Bernie Sanders of the Democratic nomination for a second time.

Here is the saying that seemed to come up out of nowhere right around 2020: "Fuck Around and Find Out." These days, you usually see it shortened simply to FAFO.

Well, there was absolutely no doubt how most of the traditional red states would vote in this last election, was there? Was it a risk? Did they pause for thought that the man that they were supporting had been convicted of 34 felonies? That he was known as a scam artist, for which there is a mountain of evidence? Were they perhaps privately a little reticent after he suggested in 2022 that parts of the American Constitution might need to be suspended? Perhaps a little nervous when he outright claimed that he intended to impose tariffs on numerous countries, but particularly China?

Nope. At least, there is no evidence of that. They were all Trump, all the way. Full speed ahead, right?

Let's own those libtards once and for all.

Then Trump came into power after winning an election in which he promised to "Make America Great Again" very quickly. He promised to end the war in Ukraine within 24 hours. Also, the price of gas and groceries would go down, again very quickly, beginning on day one.

Absolutely none of those things happened. The war in Ukraine is still going on, and Putin has completely ignored Trump's recommendations and/or threats. Trump sure seems ineffective on that score. As for the price of gas and groceries? They actually went up.

Has his support wavered? Sure it has.

Would it be enough if, theoretically, we could vote him out of office tomorrow?

Doubtful. The red states would all pretty much go red, through and through. There might - and I emphasize might with serious uncertainty - be one or two battleground states that might sway the other way. Again, though, that is not a certainty. For reasons that many people - certainly myself included - cannot understand, his supporters absolutely love him. Can't get enough of him.

His policies, however, are not friendly to them. In fact, they are voting against their own best interests. After all, he just passed the biggest tax break for the wealthiest Americans in history. All it will cost is for millions and millions - I've heard estimates in the tens of millions - to lose their insurance, and for other important government services to be suspended.

What a man of the people.

Here's the thing, though: his policies have actually hurt some of the base of his support. As we all know, specifically, the on again/off again tariff policies and threats visibly hurt the economy. In Nebraska, however, this was particularly pronounced.

You see, Nebraska farmers rely on China to export their soy beans. So when China responded to Trump's tariffs by imposing tariffs of their own, these Nebraska farmers found themselves having to pay for Trump's policies, which again, were supposed to "Make America Great Again."

Now, they are hurting. Presumably, some are scratching their heads and wondering why this happened to them. And who knows, some may actually have pieced together the reality and begun to have that infamous buyer's remorse for having helped so strongly to put Trump back into the Oval Office.

Here's where I will risk sounding insensitive, though. After all, they have now had ten years to understand Trump's gimmicks, to have seen and felt the pain of why he has earned his reputation as a scam artist extraordinaire. So to put it plainly, I don't have much sympathy if they are hurting.

They wanted to fuck around? Well, they're finding out.

That's all.

Maybe it's time to start to pay attention.
