Major Flooding Devastates the Northeastern United States

Yesterday, New Jersey saw some rather extreme weather.

In the course of maybe three or four hours, many parts of the state - including my own - saw perhaps one month's worth of rain fall. Of course, this produced problems. Many parts of the state saw flooding, including roadways and highways. Two people died. New 12 kept suggesting that this storm - as short in duration as it as intense - was as strong as some past hurricane storms, like Ida. Governor Murphy declared a State of Emergency. The State Police issued a Do Not Travel warning.

New York City also received significant rainfall and flooding, as did much of the Northeast. Once the heavy rainfall moved away from this region, I heard that it was headed to New England. They also had issues with flooding as a result.

We heard a lot about flooding in other regions recently, as well. Specifically, the horrific flooding in Texas and New Mexico, where dozens of people went missing. The Carolinas also received more flooding.

There is no way for me to identify this definitively as the product of climate change. That said, I will suggest that these rare, "once in a hundred year" or so storms sure seem to be growing more frequent. It literally felt like it hit a large chunk of the entire country this time around.  Couple that with the extreme heat waves in North America and Europe that dominated headlines in recent weeks, and it feels like you almost have to make a point of avoiding the subject of climate change not to grow alarmed.

Now, it feels hot and muggy, even swampy, as the news suggested. The extreme weather hardly feels like it is entirely over yet.

For you guys out there, please stay safe.
