It happened again, unfortunately.
France was knocked out of the Women's World Cup at the Quarterfinal stage. This time, they fell after a hard fought, albeit scoreless, game with host Australia.
The penalties were tense, and went to extra kicks, which is to say the equivalent of sudden death. There, France missed on the seventh attempt, and Australia then made their kick, which eliminated Les Bleues, and sends Australia to the Semifinals, with a 7-6 win in the penalty shootout.
Australia will play England, who knocked out Colombia, 2-1.
The other semifinal will feature Spain and Sweden. Sweden won what was likely the biggest game of the tournament, just getting past Japan, who had appeared to be a powerhouse prior to the game, having scored 14 goals and conceded only one. But they fell to Sweden, 2-1.
As for Spain, they got past Netherlands, 2-1. As I understand it, they are now the official favorites to win the tournament.
Let's see what happens next.
