New York Jets
The new NFL football season is almost here. In fact, the first preseason game - the Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio - is going to kick off in just a couple of days. It will feature the New York Jets and the de facto home team, the Cleveland Browns, who of course are only about one hour or so away, if memory serves correctly. After that, the rest of the NFL teams will begin their preseason, which will last most of a month, before the regular season then commences. And as usual, we will begin to see many of the questions lingering during the offseason answered on the football field, for better or for worse.
Both of the two New York franchises had an interesting offseason. The Giants enjoyed a remarkably successful season last year, finishing with a 9-7-1 record and qualifying for the postseason for the first time in six years. Then, they beat the Vikings on the road in Minnesota, before falling to the Philadelphia Eagles, who went on to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl, and almost won it.
As for the Jets, they went from being one of the worst teams in the league, and a team that many figured might be the worst in the league last season, to a seemingly legitimate playoff contender in their ow right, at least for much of the season. They wound up being adversely impacted by injuries, and going on a serious losing streak that ended any playoff hopes they once had. Yet, their defense looked serious and tough, and the offense looked solid as well, particularly their ground attack. Now, having added legendary quarterback Aaron Rodgers onto the roster, they seem to have very high expectations. Some fans seem to actually expect a deep run through the postseason, and possibly even a Super Bowl run.
Maybe, although I admittedly am holding off on such claims.
Still, it does make this coming Jets season more interesting and harder to predict. While I am not sure that Rodgers will take the Jets to the Super Bowl - or even the playoffs, admittedly - I do think that there is a better possibility of such things than Gang Green has seen in a long time, if everything goes right for them. That's a big "if," but indeed, if everything goes perfectly and as well as many fans apparently hope, than they may very well prove to be a serious contender this year.
In the below linked article, Aaron Rodgers apparently has impressed with a patient approach. Again, perhaps that is just what the Jets needed. Let's see what happens this season.
