Last season, the Giants managed to surprise the football world with a successful season. It began with an impressive 7-2 start. They then went four straight games without a win (0-3-1 during that stretch), but recovered just in time to clinch a playoff spot, with a 9-7-1 regular season record. Then in the Wildcard Game, they stunned the favored Minnesota Vikings on the road, 31-24, before bowing out to their division rivals, the Philadelphia Eagles, who proved to be Super Bowl bound.
After five straight losing seasons prior to that, it was a satisfying jump bac among the relative elites in the league. It also was the first time that they won a postseason game since their Super Bowl XLVI championship back in February of 2012. So it had been a while.
However, it also means that the weight of expectations was now on them. Quarterback Daniel Jones played well, after struggling for a few seasons before that. But now, there is a question as to whether or not that was just a fluke, or if he can sustain that level of play. Also, can the Giants enjoy success this season, given how difficult the challenges appear to be. After all, both the Philadelphia Eagles and the Dallas Cowboys are regarded as serious contenders this season, and not only are they in the NFC East with the Giants, but they also both have basically owned Big Blue in recent seasons.
Plus, the G-Men open up this season with seven roads trips in their first ten games. No team in NFL history has ever had so many road games so early to open up a season, and many expect this to be too great a challenge for Big Blue. So, will last season's success catch up with them? After all, it is entirely possible that they can be a better team than last year, yet not have this reflected in their record. And since they barely squeaked into the playoffs last season, and drop this year could mean failing to qualify.
So with all of that, many have already counted the Giants out. No, the local New York team that seems to be capturing all of the media attention this season are the Jets, with their new star QB, Aaron Rodgers. Many are expecting great things. But are the G-Men being too quickly dismissed? Some say that this may indeed be the case:
“The Giants are getting overlooked,” Sal said. “The jets getting all the hype is the best thing that can happen to the Giants. They are getting overlooked. They’ve gotten significantly better on offense. Their coach is one of the best in the league. I think they’re gonna win the division this year. They’re in for a big year.”
Well, let's see what happens. I like both New York area teams, and so don't begrudge the Jets, or anything. However, it would be nice to see the Giants enjoy success, and soon. They seem to have many of the pieces in place for it.
Should be an interesting season, one way or the other.
