With Rodgers at the Helm, Are the Jets Now a Legitimate Threat For a Super Bowl Run?

New York Jets

Initially, I was surprised by how many Jets fans seemed to automatically assume that picking up Aaron Rodgers this offseason automatically made Gang Green not just playoff contenders, but outright Super Bowl contenders. I mean, some of those fans seemed to be ready to make Super Bowl reservations as soon as the Jets made it official/

For me, it seemed...well, a little familiar. It reminded me of when the Jets acquired Boomer Esiason, and there was much hype that they would be serious contenders. Then a few years later, they signed Neil O'Donnell, fresh off a Super Bowl season with theh Steelers, although he proved disastrous with the Jets. Vinny Testaverde was a good pick up for Gang Green, and he came as close as any quarterback in my lifetime did to bringing the Jets to the Super Bowl. In 2008, the Jets got Brett Favre, and there was similar hype to what we are seeing now with Rodgers. But Favre was not the answer, and did not get the Jets to the Super Bowl. Neither did Michael Vick.

So by now, you can likely understand my reticence to believe that this one guy would prove to be the answer. That now, Gang Green were going to be a real threat not only to go to the postseason, but to make a deep run once there, possibly all the way to the Super Bowl.

Can it happen?

Opinions seem to differ. Some are like me, and think that such talk is quite a bit overblown. Yet there are some who are believers:

“The Bills and the Jets are unquestioned Super Bowl contenders,” said ESPN NFL analyst and former Detroit Lions quarterback Dan Orlovsky, via Sports Illustrated. “The quarterback talent that they have, the skill talent that they have, the defense that both have.”

Yet, Gang Green's former General Manager expresses doubts that the Jets can actually take that leap to such an elite level.

As I've said before, I hope that I'm wrong, and that the Jets can get there. It would please me to no end if, at season's end, I have to admit that I underestimated the impact that Rodgers would have on the Jets. Until then, however, I suspect that Rodgers can make them a contender, and that they should be in the playoffs. But the Super Bowl feels like a long shot.
