Man, Charles Barkley sure has a lot to say just lately!
A few days ago, I posted about how Sir Charles suggested that anyone who thought the Golden State Warriors could win another NBA title without Kevin Durant in the lineup knows nothing about basketball.
Well, Barkley is talking again. This time, he is borderline threatening violence, claiming that if he was still playing, he would have found a way to "knock the hell out of Drake," a famous musician from Toronto who has been frequenting Raptors games, and who has been a very visible presence during the Raptors run through the Eastern Conference playoffs to this point, at least at home games. His presence in these games has irritated some, as he was seen massaging Nick Nurse's shoulders during Game 4, and trash talking Milwaukee's Giannis Antetokounmpo, or at least trying to, anyway.
I already mentioned in my previous post about how this series really reminds me quite a bit of the 1994 Eastern Conference Finals. Strikingly, that was also the last time that I remember a non-player or coach at the center of so much attention during such a high profile series. I mean, Jack Nicholson was at all of those Lakers games during their championship runs, but he was just a famous face, and was not doing things to draw attention to himself, like Drake is doing now, or like Spike Lee was doing in that 1994 Eastern Conference Finals. As NBA fans probably remember, Spike Lee was taunting Reggie Miller, which is never a very good idea. And of course, Miller got hot, as the back and forth between him and Lee just seemed to fuel his focus and determination, and cost Lee's beloved Knicks dearly in a Game 5 that they at one point seemed to own.
There are some differences, of course. In 1994, Spike Lee was pulling for the favorites, the New York Knicks, while in this series, Drake is pulling for the underdogs, the Toronto Raptors. Spike Lee traveled to Indiana to pull for his Knicks, while Drake apparently did not accompany the Raptors to Game 5 in Milwaukee.
You can bet, however, that Drake will be there in Game 6. Barkley is not playing in this game. The Milwaukee Bucks are. But frankly, I think they had better worry more about the Toronto Raptors and what they are doing, than what one of their most famous fans are doing, or they will be in much bigger trouble at the end of the next game.
