RIP, Peter Mayhew

Sad news to report today, as actor Peter Mayhew, best known for his role as Chewbacca in the original Star Wars trilogy, has died.

Mayhew actually died earlier in the week, on Tuesday, April 30th, although the Mayhew family did not publicly share this until two days later.

Some of his Star Wars co-stars shared their thoughts and memories of Mayhew, including Mark Hammill and Harrison Ford.

Mark Hamill, who played Luke Skywalker, described Mayhew as "the gentlest of giants."

Hamill said:

"What was so remarkable about him was his spirit and his kindness and his gentleness was so close to what a Wookiee is.

"He just radiated happiness and warmth. He was always up for a laugh and we just hit it off immediately and stayed friends for over 40 years."

Harrison Ford, who became the biggest movie star to come from the Star Wars franchise, playing not only Han Solo in Star Wars, but also the iconic role of Indiana Jones, among many other famous roles that he played, also paid tribute to Mayhew:

"We were partners in film and friends in life for over 30 years and I loved him," said Ford.

"He invested his soul in the character and brought great pleasure to the Star Wars audience."

Mayhew overcame considerable obstacles to bounce back and give something to the Star Wars community of fans, as his family made clear in a statement:

"He fought his way back from being wheelchair-bound to stand tall and portray Chewbacca once more in Star Wars: The Force Awakens."

RIP, Peter Mayhew. You will be missed.
