Most of us understood and accepted the results of the 2020 election. When pretty much all of the election officials (which constitutes both parties), all the news media, and the vast majority of the people of the country accept a result, there is a good chance that the results are legitimate. After all, the results of pretty much every other election in recent memory were accepted. Of course, the losers are not happy about it. But again, they always seemed to accept it.
Not this time. Of course this time, it was Donald Trump, the infamous MAGAlomaniac. He had said for years that there was no way that he could possibly lose this election to Joe Biden, or pretty much anyone else. He said such ridiculous things despite having "won" the 2016 election without receiving a majority of the votes. Also, not once during his four years in office had he received a majority of Americans who supported him. But that guy never lets inconvenient facts distort what he perceived to be reality, which always happens to be favorable to him and to what he wants.
As Biden, the legitimate winner of the election pointed out, no avenues were blocked for Trump to contest the results of the election. There were recounts in numerous states across the land. Not one state found Trump to be the winner after the recount. There were 62 court cases, and it should be pointed out that the Trump legal team not only did not argue the "massive voter fraud" that it was publicly alleging in front of television cameras, but in fact bent over backwards to make clear that it was not arguing any massive voter fraud, despite the Trump legal team's insistence of irrefutable proof that it possessed (but apparently never felt fit to actually release before any serious scrutiny). Of those 62 court cases - many under Trump-appointed judges - the Trump legal team lost 61 of them. Not one of them would have overturned a single state election, let alone the national election results. Yet, he lost almost all of them, anyway.
I have asked some Trump fans why they don't scrutinize this a little bit more closely. Why, if this man holds absolute proof of some "massive voter fraud," did he not make his case in the courts, when he clearly had plenty of chances? They always seem to kind of change the subject, and still claim to believe that there was massive voter fraud, despite the obvious lack of proof.
Whatever. They are free to believe what they want to believe.
However, FOX News and other Trump backing media are not free to simply make news up. They are not able to simply push their propaganda onto the nation, and then muddy the waters and make it seem like believing in the "massive voter fraud" theory is some legitimate political belief or stance. If you have absolute, irrefutable proof, you present it. Otherwise, you shut up and accept the results.
But that they did not do. They tried to have an insurrection, what I believe to be nothing short of an attempted coup d'etat. And we have learned that it came a lot closer to succeeding than we might be comfortable believing.
That is criminal conduct, and those responsible need to be held accountable.
This was a brief video clip from Bill Maher's show, Real Time With Bill Maher, in which they discuss this, and which it seemed fitting to share here under these circumstances.
