Most Recent Updates From Turkey & Syria Are Very Grim

It seems that each time that I try to post an update on the earthquake in Turkey and Syria, the death toll has not just climbed up higher, but skyrocketed up in  a stunning manner.

Today, with an update from the New York Times less than one hour ago as I write this, the report is stating that more than 12,000 people were killed by that magnitude 7.8 earthquake in Turkey, near the border with Syria.

Also, the misery of those who found themselves displaced after their homes were destroyed feels very grim. There are people in both Turkey and Syria who are living in misery at the moment:

"families huddled in the cold rain, hitching tarps to make improvised tents, resting on bits of furniture pulled from the wreckage and lining up for shoes, blankets — anything available.

Many were angry that it was taking so long for rescue crews with heavy machinery to arrive. In Kahramanmaras, where President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey visited on Wednesday, three bodies were recovered from a six-story building and there were at least six more victims in the rubble. “The volunteers were here, but not the state,” said a relative of two of the victims.

Frankly, it does not feel like this will be resolved quickly or easily.
