Well, with two blog entries related to the Beatles already published earlier today, it seems fitting just to publish this one today, as well.
Last year, Julian Lennon - who is of course the son of the late great John Lennon, who made it huge with the Beatles and then went on to have a very successful solo career as well - released his first music album in well over a decade last year. It was titled "Jude," which is of course an ode to the very famous Beatles song, "Hey Jude." That song was written by Paul McCartney, and had originated when McCartney had tried to cheer up the then very young Julian Lennon (the Jude referred to in the song) about his parents splitting up.
Also, while many rightly view John Lennon as an inspiration for his efforts to stop war and to the extent that he and his new partner, Yoko Ono, did what they could to try and wake people up to create a better world, Julian Lennon's own experiences regarding his father were very different. Thus, his impressions of his father were also very different. For him, John Lennon largely seemed to abandon his mother and him. Imagine having to hear a very popular, even legendary song, about that time when your parents split up, hearing it over and over again, God knows how many times. And imagine also, having to hear songs which his father wrote and dedicated to his younger son through all of this, while seemingly still largely ignoring his first, eldest son, Julian. You can see why Julian Lennon had very different feelings about his very famous father than most other people did.
Here is a bit on how Julian felt about the song, from when he grew up and without possessing yet the maturity to understand what the song was actually about, and then coming to a deeper understanding:
“Obviously as a kid, [McCartney’s] lyrics and the song at the age of five didn’t really mean too much,” he continued, adding, “Of course it was only later in life that I realised what it was all about. And as much as I’m very thankful because of his support in having written that song a lot of people don’t realise it was also a dark reminder of what actually did happen.”
“Of dad walking out the door, leaving mum and I on our own to fend for ourselves. And that really, really, really was the case.”
A lot of people assumed that he (Julian) and his mother Cynthia surely obtained a lot of money from John Lennon, Cynthia's former husband, and Julian's father. But that was not precisely accurate. Julian elaborated on this, as well:
“People think it was a different situation that everything was hunky dory and there was lots of money in the bank. That was never ever the case. The thing that was most important to me was there was looking after mum.”
“She was the be all and end all of life for me, and it was about looking after her, still is about making her proud. Everything I do is to make her proud really, at the end of the day. Even though she’s not with us anymore. I know she guides me a little bit from time to time.”
It is a fascinating story. And you can learn a bit more about it by perusing the article which I added the link to here below:
