Today is a remarkably important date in Beatles history. While the band had played before at the Cavern Club in Liverpool since August of 1957, they played their first gig their with their new name, The Beatles, on this day in 1961:

The Quarrymen made their first appearance at the club on 7 August 1957,[1] but by 9 February 1961,[2] when the group first performed there under their new name of the Beatles,

Then, just three years later, it was on this day that The Beatles played their famous (albeit brief) set on the Ed Sullivan Show, before throngs of screaming fans. They had arrived two days earlier, on February 7th. But it sure seemed like their taking over of American airwaves and the adoration of young people all across the country was complete with that unforgettable Ed Sullivan Show. In all, 73 million Americans watched this broadcast, which is an amazing number, especially for the time:

Finally, just a couple of years after the Beatles broke up, Paul McCartney's new band played their first show on this date in 1972:
