Super Bowl LVII Will Be First Featuring Two Starting Black Quarterbacks

🏈🏈🏈🏈

A few days ago, I mentioned how this Super Bowl seems to have more human interest stories than most other Super Bowls have had.

Well, one of those is a distinction that is almost surprising: this will be the first time that two black quarterbacks will face one another in the big game.

I am old enough to remember how big of a deal it was the first time that there was a black quarterback set to start the Super Bowl. That would be Doug Williams in Super Bowl XXII. I was definitely rooting for him to win, because something about the Denver Broncos rubbed me the wrong way back then. But it did not look good after the first quarter, when Washington trailed, 10-0. However, Williams threw four touchdown passes in the second quarter alone, as the team scored a whopping 35 points in that one quarter, still easily a Super Bowl record for most points scored by one team in a single quarter. That put it out of reach, and Williams walked away with the MVP award, to boot.

Since then, we have seen other black quarterbacks play and win. We saw Steve "Air" McNair almost win the whole thing with the Titans in Super Bowl XXXIV, and saw Donovan McNabb also come close in XXXIX with the Eagles. Colin Kaepernick started for the 49ers in XLVII. Russell Wilson started in two straight Super Bowls with the Seahawks, winning the first one (XLVIII) and then losing the second one in rather shocking fashion (XLIX). Cam Newton had an unbelievable season in 2015, leading the Panthers to an amazing 14-0 start and a 15-1 regular season overall, but he fell short in Super Bowl 50, losing to the Broncos. Then Patrick Mahomes started in two straight Super Bowls as well and, like Wilson, he won the first one and then fell short in the second one.

Now, Mahomes is back, starting in his third Super Bowl in four years. And Jalen Hurts is going to start in his first ever Super Bowl. Exciting stuff!

The road to a Super Bowl featuring 2 Black starting QBs for the first time was paved by several trailblazers by Deron Snyder   |   Jan 31, 2023:

OPINION: Patrick Mahomes and Jalen Hurts will make history on Super Bowl Sunday thanks to the Black QBs who had to fight racism and defy stereotypes just to play the position.
